Phoenix Park Hay is a small farming operation that produces lucerne hay in round bales & small squares, lucerne round bale silage, sorghum hay & sorghum round bale silage. We produce for the beef & dairy industry, leisure & stud horse owners & a local goat quarantine/export facility.
The lucerne grown on the farm is the aurora variety. It is grown due to being winter active, having a high resistance to pests & diseases, has an excellent stand life & produces high quality hay. Whilst there are supreme varieties of lucerne available, aurora is grown for its all-round suitability.
BMR sorghum is grown for silage & hay production. This sorghum provides a narrow stem, has great leaf cover, grows extremely well & provides a good palatable product. The BMR is planted in October & generally provides 3 cuts, the last being in about early April. When the silage is “made” it gives off a nice sweet smell & the cattle love it.
